As part of Jean Wilcox’s Entrepreneurial Marketing class, students were assigned a project this year designated as the “10-10-10” project. The idea originated from a discussion about the upcoming date of October 10, 2010 (or 10/10/10) and the concept of starting a movement through social networking to create a global community focused on issues around sustainability, charity, and community. Students are given $10 seed money and must multiply that by at least a factor of ten. The ESA is partnering with a student group to bring you the Owl Auction benefiting the Chris Pavlides Scholarship Fund to keep his memory alive. After tragically passing away last semester in a car accident, Pavlides is still remembered as an inspiring individual who made the difference in the lives of entrepreneurs and students throughout the Greater Philadelphia Area and beyond. On April 21st between 9-5 at Alter Hall, the Owl Keepsake Auctions, in conjunction with ESA, will be auctioning off Chris Pavlides’ owl collection. All proceeds will go towards the endowment fund in the name of Constantine “Chris” Pavlides. You can check out all of the owl keepsakes that will be auctioned off on our Facebook by searching Owl Keepsake Auctions!

Kimberly Rose Designs
Mar 31
This morning, the ESA partnered with Kimberly Rose Designs in our first effort to support a fellow entrepreneur. Kimberly is a sophomore at Temple who makes jewelry and clothing out of recycled materials, and donates 60% of her proceeds towards non-profit organizations. Her current goal is to send 2 children with cancer to Camp Okizu, a Northern Californian Summer Camp. Kimberly spread out her wide array of jewelry over fabric, and draped earrings over a tree inspired jewelry stand. The morning started off with us discussing which materials went into which pieces: the recycled paper in this necklace, or the beach pebbles from Kimberly’s recent vacation to the Dominican Republic which now decorated that necklace. Kimberly won over the hearts of women looking for jewelry and men in search of presents for their mothers and girlfriends alike. If you missed out on Kimberly’s sale today, she will be selling jewelry again at this year’s Social Entrepreneurship Conference on April 8th, 2010.
The ESA has many fine members that exude entrepreneurial spirit, and somehow manage to juggle a grueling course load and maintain their own venture. Perhaps the best example of a member who has gone above and beyond is Mohamed Ali Niang. Mohamed has entered nearly all of the major American business plan competitions with his brother Salif Romano Niang, a Purdue University graduate student. Together, the two form Malo Traders, a business idea that many believe could greatly diminish third world starvation and malnutrition.
Mohamed and Salif hail from Mali, a West African nation that ranks as the World’s 25th poorest nation. Malo Traders aims to revolutionize the rice farming industry of Mali, by modernizing the marketing, storing, and processing aspects of rice farmers in Mali. By gaining access to new markets, farmers will be able to turn higher revenue, and the community as a whole can only benefit from this revolution that Malo Traders is set to accomplish. Not only may it help end hunger, but if the GDP of Mali increases and income levels follow, the youth of Mali could see new schools built, and new industries begin to develop.
Currently, Malo Traders has entered University of Washington’s Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition, Harvard’s Pitch For Change, University of California Berkley’s Global Social Venture Competition, Sparkseed Social Innovation Competition, the Dell Social Innovation Competition, and of course Temple University’s own Be Your Own Boss Bowl. Malo traders has had great success advancing to the finals and semi-finals of many of these competitions, and the ESA wishes Mohamed and Salif all the best.

We’re so excited to help one of our own entrepreneurs. Kimberly Ross is one of-a-kind. I met her at a Women’s Networking Night hosted by the IEI last semester and was extremely impressed. Kimberly gets clothing and recycles it into beautiful pieces for sale. Not only is she tremendously talented, but she is also terrifically generous as she donates 60% of the profits to charity. Her first goal is to send 2 kids with cancer to Camp Okizu, for which she needs to raise $2,000. So, on March 31st we’re going to help her reach her goal! Kimberly will be selling her clothing pieces at our ESA table from 9am to 12 noon. Come out and support a very ambitious and talented entrepreneur!
